A Retreat with Francis and Clare
Following Our Pilgrim Hearts
by Murray Bodo and Susan Saint Sing

This book takes us to the places in Assisi where Francis and Clare lived out their spiritual quest. We are guided on an imaginary pilgrimage to those places where we can reflect on our own spiritual journey. It is a short book (93 pages) arranged in six sessions, one for each day of an imaginary pilgrimage to Assisi Italy.
Murray Bodo and Susan St. Sing are the reader's retreat directors, and their itinerary takes us to:
Day One: Arriving at the train station in Assisi
Day Two: Stopping at the Leper Hospital on the ascent to Assisi perched on the slopes of Mount Subasio
Day Three: A journey past the ancient olive groves to San Damiano
Day Four: St. Clare's Basilica
Day Five: The Cross that Spoke
Day Six: St. Francis' Basilica
Bodo and St. Sing are among my favorite writers on the topic of Assisi and its two most popular saints, Francis and Clare. They have balanced the lives and the spirituality of the two saints in a way that brings Clare out of the shadow of the ever-so-popular Francis.
And, the authors design a genuine pilgrimage by evoking Assisi itself and the pilgrimage track that leads from the train station to the great Basilica of St. Francis. Having been to Assisi many times, I am happy to say that they vividly recreate the journey for pilgrims who have been there. And they create lovely word pictures and images for those who desire to go there someday.
Each day of this private retreat includes opening meditations, reflections, and closing prayers. It is very well done. This is a book that I recommend to people who journey with us at Storyfest on our pilgrimages to Assisi.
