Storytellers: A Biographical Directory
of 120 English-Speaking Performers Worldwide
Corki Miller and Mary Ellen Snodgrass
I must admit that I was hesitant to review this book, since I am one of the 120 storytellers listed. But when I saw the book I couldn't put it down. There is so much useful information in this unique publication. And so I decided to review the book, but identify my inclusion in the book at the beginning of the review.
I say the book is unique because of the approach the authors used. There are many directories of storytellers. And perhaps the annual directory published by the National Storytelling Association has the largest listing. But the NSA directory hardly goes beyond name, address, and phone number. Most additional information is in fact a paid advertisement. So how is Miller and Snodgrass' "Storytellers: A Biographical Directory" unique?
First, the author-editors gathered an enormous amount of information. I know this because they gathered my information from me. They then put the data in their own format in a most careful, a most meticulous way. And they included almost everything I sent! The result is a very detailed description of 120 tellers that reads like a substantial reference book. And indeed it is. Their categories are: Address, Focus, Audience, Style, Instruments/Props, Detailed Description, Bibliography, Videography, Audiography, Awards, and Source. And, for every teller, a black and white photo.
Why do I like this book? Because it gives me complete listings of tapes and books available from 120 tellers worldwide. Where else could I find such a complete resource in one place. Why else? Because the Detailed Descriptions are themselves wonderful stories. They are the way these storytellers "tell their own stories." This is the part that is fascinating reading -- for what and how the tellers tell reveals a lot about them as persons. And there is no editorial bias present, for every one of the 120 tellers presents themselves in their own words.
If I were looking to contact a storyteller for a performance or workshop, I would turn to Miller & Snodgrass' book before any other resource. If I were building my own resource collection of tapes and books, "Storytellers: A Biographical Directory" would also be a primary resource.
This book is relevant for preachers and teachers who are looking for resources in storytelling presented by actual storytellers who make a living plying their craft. I recommend it without hesitation. Since it is a limited edition book, the cost is high ($55). But it is superbly crafted, and a resource that will last a lifetime.
Congratulations to Corki Miller and Mary Ellen Snodgrass for a job well done! It was truly a labor of love, and their love for storytelling is evident throughout this elegant book.
