History of the School of Sacred Storytelling

The School's basic course, "Storytelling Skills in Ministry" was first taught jointly by Dr. Robert Wilhelm and his mentor, Prof. Wayne R Rood, at the Pacific School of Religion/Graduate Theological Union in the summer of 1977, a year after Wilhelm received his doctorate (Th.D.) in storytelling as sacred art. Soon, Wilhelm was teaching the seminar across North America regularly, and in 1994 the seminar became the required introductory course of the new apprenticeship program of Wilhelm's School of Sacred Storytelling.

Hundreds of persons in diverse ministries have learned and used his technique, and studied his theology and spirituality, in the past thirty years, placing Robert Béla Wilhelm in the center of narrative theology and sacred storytelling in the churches today.

Besides teaching, Wilhelm created the weekly Lectionary Storybook in 1994, covering the complete three-year cycle of lectionary readings for the Western Churches. Originally published as printed text, it is now produced as audio sound files, complete with Scriptural images, stories from the peoples of the world, and a commentary on the spirituality of the story.

The School of Sacred Storytelling now combines on-line learning and residential on-site seminars for all its courses. Always an ecumenical endeavor, the School convenes on-site seminars globally.
