School of Sacred Storytelling
George Brownholtz
MARYLAND
Graduate 1998

Fr. George is co-chaplain of the Little Sisters of the Poor and is on the staff of the Oblate Retreat Center, Childs, MD. In 1994 George celebrated the 25th Anniversary of his Ordination. Thirteen years as a missionary were spent in South Africa and Namibia. In between assignments overseas, nine years teaching special education and theology have sharpened creative skills in his storytelling. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Brownholtz often practices faith experience stories with his family. If they can stay awake for ten minutes, then it may be a good story for the Sunday homily.

Listening to the residents of the nursing home, Fr. George's stories come alive at the noon day meal. The sacredness of each of their stories and his are passed around the friendly table and delightfully shared. Group sharing and modeling are used as training approaches to help tie in personal stories with the Gospel message. Fr. Brownholtz emphasizes the pains and joys of the spiritual journey, borrowing bits and pieces primarily from God's word and writers like Henri Nouwen, Anthony DeMello, Edward Hays, and Twelve Step Programs, as well as Namaqualand people of the Republic of South Africa.

Fr Brownholtz is available for presenting days of recollection, workshops and directed or parish retreats. Thus he provides the listeners and presenter alike with an opportunity to enrich one another and to accept the challenge to live the Gospel values. When stories are in the air and people gather, Fr. Brownholtz feels comfortable whether at the Oblate retreat and conference center or on the road.
