29th Annual Institute - The Art of Sacred Storytelling

June 9 - 13, 2008 at Hallowood Conference Center, Maryland

Jews, Christians & Muslims do not share many beliefs, religious customs, nor theologies. And though we can work together in areas of common concern -- social justice, peacemaking, etc -- we retain our separate identities. We may individually pray together, but we cannot collectively worship togther.
We can however, share our stories together. Storytelling has a way of bringing people together -- first as a circle of listeners -- and then as a community of understanding.
I am a Catholic Christian, who first entered into dialogue with Muslims and Jews in 1976 when I taught university courses on the Faith of Abraham as expressed by Jews, Christians, and Muslims at Niagara Univerisity. My method was, and is, to teach primarily through story.

|
Conference Goals:
|
|
(1) Primarily - Respectfully bring some of the storytelling wisdom of Judaism and Islam into my Christian community whenever those stories will deepen our understanding of God and enrich our Christian spirituality.
(2) Secondarily - Encourage shared storytelling and listening among members of all three communities.
(3) Finally - Reach out to Jews and Muslims as a non-evangelizing Catholic Christian storyteller, eager to promote understanding -- through narrative -- among the communites who share a common heritage through Abraham.
